-from Firefly, ep. "The Message"-
{Back To Cosplay Gallery}

Date Completed: April 2005
First Worn at: Anime Boston 2005
Time Spent: approx. 30 hours
Materials Cost: approx. $230
Notes: Ever since I saw Firefly, I have wanted to make one of Inara's dresses. She has such a beautiful wardrobe! I chose the Gold dress she wears in the episode "The Message" because I really loved the style and fit of the dress. It also was one that I at first thought would be easy to find fabric for. Turned out that wasnt true, I did find the perfect fabric in NYC, however it was $82 a yard. I went with a gold brocade from JoAnn's that was $14.99 a yard instead, the design was a little more elaborate, but it still was really nice. Most of the actual sewing for this dress was fairly simple. I altered a pattern for the top bodice, and added a shrug, which was basically just a gathered and folded rectactangle stiched to the top, it worked much better than trying to figure out some crazy pattern for it. The skirt was two parts, the overskirt I made a flat draft pattern for, and it was very simple. The underskirt was built on top of a red crinoline that I bought. It was really only half of the way around the crinoline to save on money. All of the red on the dress was two layers of fabric. One was a red and gold brocade that was lightweight like Sari material. Then there was a deep red chiffon layered on top of that fabric. The flowerets on the top of the bodice were made by making a large yo-yo (its a gathered circle that is more often used on quilts)and then cut it in half and sewed them to the inner lining of the top. The necklace for this costume was made from the beads off of a candle holder. I basically took sections of the beads and shifted them around to turn it into a necklace. I found a pair of shoes that were gold, silver and bronze sequined at Target. Over all it was a very wonderful costume, and I am very proud of it. I also wore this dress to prom in my senior year. Sadly, however I only have one picture of this costume :(
