First Worn at: Halloween '04
Time Spent: 20 hours
Materials Cost: $150
Notes: This was my Halloween costume for 2004, and I made it in under a week's time! For this outfit I did use a commercial pattern, it was Simplicity 0500. It was not a terribly hard pattern to use but the skirt was difficult to sew mostly because there was a lot of fabric to have to gather and just generally getting in the way! I used Dupioni Silk Shantung for the top, and then for the skirt I use a somewhat shimmery cotton for the red, and a woven paisley jaquard. The top was lined and interfaced (all but the sleeves). My choice of colors was simply because I really love the color red on me, but it ended up adding a lot to the costume. When my friend Anjali saw the outfit, she pointed out that since it was red, it was a lot like a Hindu wedding dress (red is a traditional wedding color in Hindu culture). I made a veil to go with it, and it was made from a polyester chiffon...oh how I wish I could have had silk chiffon! XP All of the beaded trim and ribbon was hand sewn on in order to keep the stitches less visible.
