- of Star Wars: A New Hope- {Back To Cosplay Gallery} Date Completed: May 2005 First Worn at: "Revenge of the Sith" Premiere Time Spent: 30 hours Materials Cost: approx. $120 Notes: I just had to make this dress for the premiere of the final movie, "Revenge of the Sith". I have always loved this dress that Leia wears, and so I was happy to get it done. I nearly didn't finish it in time because the pattern I used (Butterick 6593) was actually wrong, and there were pieces that didn't fit together correctly. So I spent a lot of time drafting inserts, and figureing out how to make it all work properly! The sleeves were the strangest part however, and I did them at the last minute, like only a few hours before leaving for the theater. I basically just draped a large piece of chiffon on my dressform, figured out where the shoulders would be and if it would hang correctly, and then I folded the piece in half and put the front dress pattern piece down on the fold and cut out the neckline with about a 1/2 inch in addition to the seam allowance worked into the pattern. Basically from then on it was a lot of serging of seams and hand sewing the silly thing in place. My belt was made from foamies with siver vinyl wrapped around them and duct taped in place, and then aluminum pieces and button refil covers glued on with the super thin instant set glue that you can get at hobby shops. That was the best hold I could find for the metal pieces. My Necklace and bracelet were aluminum that I cut and everything in my Jewelry and Metalworking class. I had to make braided wefts to pin into my hair for the bun and the braid, and that was fun. My hair had so much hair spray in it to keep my short hair up hidden in the bun. All around this was a really cool costume, and I had a lot of fun wearing it to the movie. Photos by Mary Primeau & Kathie Greenwold
